On a press trip some time ago (@visitflanders, @visitbrussels) I was introduced to the world of Belgian comic books. For over a century Belgians (Flemish & Wallons) have been creating an internationally acclaimed literary niche that somehow entertained and bridged a cultural divide. While in Brussels wander the streets on an interpretive walking tour admiring original wall illustrations depicting these larger-than-life “influencers” on Belgian culture. #comicbooks #culturaltravel #literature #europetravel #travelwhenitssafe
From a 2016 trip to Jordon a view of 1st century AD Roman ruins from the Citadel of Amman. Yet there’s evidence of occupation since 1800 BC, capital of ancient #Jordon Kingdom from 1200 BC and under a variety of empires through the 19th century. The Citadel of #Amman is considered to be among the world's oldest continuously inhabited places. @visitjordan #culturaltravel #antiquities #romanruins #middleeasttravel #traveljournalist #saturdayvibes
Happy National Orchid Day, today April 16. Many people including myself prize the unique beauty of #orchids even though they are Earth’s 2nd most common plant family found on every continent, & in most environments, except Antarctica with about 30,000 species growing in the wild. This #tropical selection is from several travels to the Hawaii Tropical Botanical Garden on the Big Island. #nature_perfection #tropicalgardens #biodiversity #hawaiianislands #flowersoftheday @natdaycal
A #throwbackthursday memory of the many #Spring seasons I experienced during my life in Philadelphia. Particularly beautiful in the Historic Core and Rittenhouse Square. @visitphilly #urbanlandscape #springinthecity #urbanphotography
Soaring sails - a good metaphor for the seaport of @visitpuertovallarta. It’s in the entrance to Puerto Vallarta’s Convention Center, which today was a site to administer 2nd shot covid vaccines for us 60+ age group. By the end of the week at least 20,000 60+ ought to have their 2nd shot. #covidvacccine #itsstillnotover
Rarely have I seen an “albino leopard gecko” (at least that’s what a goggle search suggests). This one was in my apartment @visitpuertovallarta #wildanimals #gecko #mexicowildlife
Happy Easter. The tradition of the #egg as a symbol of #easter goes back dozens of centuries. When spending Greek Orthodox Easter in 2019 on Corfu Island, brightly dyed red Easter Eggs are an icon. But #chocolate can’t be “left out.” At Corfu’s elegant Domes Miramare Resort they had a lobby display of (large) Chocolate Easter Eggs taken to new levels of #foodart. @domesmiramare @corfuweddingcar @corfu.island #eastereggs #greekorthodoxeaster @thegoldenbutler #culinarytravel #greekislands #greektravel @x_adventure_club

Fireworks: an ephemeral art form since the 11th century. I like seeing them every night - a #viewfrommywindow - when fired off from the @pirateshipvallarta over the #bahiadebanderas @visitpuertovallarta #traveltuesday #fireworks_lovers #ephemera
Mexico City, as an international capital, displays a wealth of public artistic creations. Here are just 4 examples along Mexico City’s art and history lined Paseo de la Reforma:
Chef Diego Gomez, @qulturepv special next few weeks is savory Seafood Empanadas with a (medium) spicy Mole Sauce. @diegogo9603 #empanadas #molesauce #mexicanfood #culinarytourism @visitpuertovallarta
For a #foodiefriday if in Puerto Vallarta #mexico enjoy the fresh & imaginative #gravlax at The Swedes Bar & Bistro - cured #salmon “rose” with honey mustard dill dressing. @theswedesbarandbistro #foodievallarta #gravlaxsalmon @visitpuertovallarta
Croagh Patrick on the west coast in County Mayo is Ireland’s “Holy Mountain” and at 2,500 feet (764 meters) is the country’s 4th tallest. In the year 441 Saint Patrick fasted for 40 days praying for his (successful) quest to convert Ireland to Christianity. St. Patrick chose the mountain deliberately to make his statement since it has been sacred for over 5,000 years in Celtic tradition. If you look carefully, you will see a small chapel at its summit built in 1905, and there has been a chapel on the summit since the 5th century. In July thousands of believers make a pilgrimage climb (often barefoot) up the treeless, rocky mountain to venerate Ireland’s patron saint. Of special note, in the 1980s geologist discovered what had often been suspected – gold. It’s estimated that over $500,000,000 of gold could be mined from Croagh Patrick and there were many companies interested. But the Mayo County Council passed legislation forbidding mining. Happy St. Patrick’s Day (March 17) to all my #irish friends ☘️ @tourismireland #irishheritage
“Beware the Ides of March,” says the soothsayer to ( in Shakespeare’s play) Julius Caesar, but he doesn’t listen and on the 15 March 44 B.C. (the actual Ides of March) he is assassinated in the Roman Forum. On one of my trips to #rome I had the good fortune of attending a performance of Julius Caesar in the #romanforum. #shakespeare #juliuscaesar #antiquities #ancienthistory #italytravel #culturaltourism
March 14 is NATIONAL LEARN ABOUT BUTTERFLIES DAY. Few people need to be reminded of how essential the #butterfly is to life through plant pollination. In Costa Rica (photos 1 & 2) is a large butterfly house at the La Paz Waterfall Gardens/Peace Lodge with a collection of over 4,000 butterflies from 40 native species – only a small portion of Costa Rica’s over 1,200 species. In Pennsylvania (photos 3 & 4) is the Butterfly Atrium in the Hershey Gardens, a 23-acre botanical garden and arboretum, located at the historic Hotel Hershey. @peacelodgeandwaterfallgardens @distinctivehotels @hersheygardens @natdaycal #naturephotography #botanicalgardens
I have loved eating and making hummus most of my life. Written documentation on hummus first appeared in Egypt in the 13th century, but like most iconic regional foods it has likely been around for centuries before. The basis of #hummus is chickpeas, sesame paste (tahini), lemon juice and garlic. There is no “one true” recipe with regional variations throughout the Middle East & Greece. A complex carbohydrate food, it’s low in saturated fat and high in fiber and protein…and it tastes terrific! #foodie #hummuslover #foodsoftheworld
Some of the latest #mosics in the on-going transformation of Lazaro Cardenas Park into El Parque de los Azulejos (aka “Tile Park”) by talented volunteers under the direction of Natasha Moraga. The multi-year project captures the admiration of all residents & visitors to @visitpuertovallarta Check the website: https://www.tileparkpv.com/ @parqueazulejospv #publicart #urbanlandscape #mexicantravel @nat_moraga
Fabled Teotihuacan (1st - 8th century) from atop the Pyramids of the Sun & Moon. By the 6th century it was a city of over 100,000. All photos by @germancurielayon from our Dec. 2019 trip. The @unescoworldheritage site is just northeast of Mexico City. #mexicantravel #culturaltourism #mexicanheritage @visitmexico

One of my favorite Puerto Vallarta public bronze sculptures is "Andale Bernardo” by Jim Demetro on Lazaro Cardenas Park (“Tile Park”) in Emiliano Zapata. Both its whimsy & the serious boys always makes me smile. It’s a great attraction for children. @visitpuertovallarta #publicart #publicartinstallation
